CATEGORIES
There are a variety of categories to challenge every level of rider. If you are new to racing, sign up for the recommended category. If you are an experienced racer and would like to upgrade to a higher category, fill out this petition and email to League Director (peter@virginiamtb.org). If approved, your category will be changed in the Pit Zone by the League Director. This means that when you register, you just sign up for the recommended category. NEW High School Race Categories
Beginning this season, the Virginia Interscholastic Cycling League will use a skills-based category system for high school racers. Riders will no longer be placed in categories based on grade level. Instead, coaches will work with athletes to select the category that best matches their current skills, fitness, and racing experience.
This system aligns with the category structure used by NICA leagues across the country and provides a more appropriate and competitive racing experience for every athlete.
JV3
The League’s entry-level high school racing category. Riders who are new to mountain bike racing will automatically be placed in JV3.
JV2
Designed for developing riders who have gained racing experience and are ready for greater competition but are not yet prepared for the pace and intensity of JV1.
JV1
For intermediate to advanced riders seeking a faster, more competitive race environment while continuing to build toward the demands of Varsity competition.
Varsity
The League’s highest high school racing category. Varsity riders compete at the fastest speeds and race longer distances against the strongest competition in the series.
*BOYS AND GIRLS CATEGORIES ARE SEPARATE.
